While most people understand that estimates regarding the divorce rate in the United States range from 36 to 50 percent, most people also assume that when people have been married for many years and reach the age of 50, they are unlikely to ever encounter this process.  While that was somewhat true for generations in the United States, statistics show that this is no longer the case.  The divorce rate in the United States for people who are over 50 years of age has exploded during the past 20 years.

Researchers at Bowling Green State University in Kentucky have recently released a compilation of statistics that looked at the divorce rate for American couples over 50 years of age.  The starting point for this analysis was 1990, and at that time the divorce rate for people of this age group was 4.67 divorces for every 1,000 people.  However, in 2008, the divorce rate had risen to 9.74 per 1,000 people, or more than double the rate 18 years earlier.

Clearly, people tend to have accumulated more assets by the time they pass 50 years of age than they have when they are in their 20’s.  Therefore, these divorces may seem simple on the surface because children may be out of the home and debt may be minimal, but it can also lead to high asset divorces that can lead to an entirely different set of complications for both of the people involved.
