Studies that look at divorce are being done regularly, but a recent study that was performed by researchers at the University of Virginia is drawing much in the way of notice because of some of the surprising conclusions it draws.  One of those conclusions concerns just how deeply affected the American public seems to be by the latest economic recession, as it seems to be having a profound effect on the current divorce rate.

The researchers reviewed over 1,000 married couples who were between the ages of 18 and 45.  Of those couples, 34 percent were worried about being able to pay their bills, 29 percent had seen their income levels drop and 12 percent of the study's subjects faced a foreclosure on their homes.  These percentages seemed to play into the result that caught the attention of those who follow these developments.  That result was that 38 percent of the people who were asked responded that they had experienced thoughts of divorce or separation, but that they put those thoughts off because of their current financial situation.

This finding tends to reflect what others have seen in other contexts.  Many married couples are hesitating to pursue a divorce because they are dealing with an upside-down mortgage, because they lack the income to make their bill payments and because they are becoming more desperate when it comes to the availability of funds.  As a result, people are not willing to take the steps necessary to end their marriage.
