As researchers and statisticians compile their facts and figures that relate to many different social phenomena, one subject that’s been drawing more interest is divorce.  It’s gotten to the point where even the United States Census Bureau has been involved with studying this issue, and the agency recently released a relatively comprehensive set of statistics that deal with this process, how it happens, when it happens and where it happens with the most frequency.

Specifically, this census report detailed where in the United States married couples are more likely to obtain a divorce and compared them to where people are less likely to undertake this process.  In what will likely come as a surprise to many, the states with the highest divorce rates for both men and women include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.  These are generally states where people would assume that marriages last longer than in most other places, but the data uncovered the reality.

In addition to the highest divorce rates in the United States, the places where the divorce rates were the lowest were in the northeastern United States, including such states as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maine among others.  California was also found to have a much lower divorce rate than what would be defined as the median across the country.

While the results of this statistical compilation are both interesting and quite surprising for some, it obviously does not mean that people who want their marriages to work out should move to places where the divorce rates are low.  Every marriage is different and if yours is one that unfortunately is not going to work, you need to take steps to do what’s best for everyone involved.

If you are facing the prospect of a divorce, you need to seek the help of San Diego divorce lawyers who have helped countless clients emerge from this difficult process and move on with their lives.  Contact the law office of James D. Scott today to schedule an initial consultation.
