For more than a year now we’ve heard that the divorce rate in the United States is down, and one of the main reasons or explanations offered for that drop is because of the current recession and people’s inability to afford going through this process.  However, a recent study performed by researchers at the University of Missouri tends to contradict what is emerging as a quasi societal norm.

According to that research that dealt with couples who were in the same income bracket, those in a bracket low enough to need government assistance were more likely to feel less satisfaction with their marriages, more likely to feel trapped in their marriages and more likely to wind up divorced than people who were in higher income brackets.  However, the lead researcher on this study cautioned that the results should not lead to assumptions that the divorce rate will skyrocket as more and more people encounter the need for governmental assistance, as we live in unique times.

The explanations offered for these results include the somewhat obvious fact that people who are struggling financially tend to encounter stress levels that others who are not in the same difficult position tend to avoid.  Being in a state of constant stress also means that it’s more likely that conflicts will arise with those who are seen regularly.
