When people who are of a high net worth decide that they want to end their marriage, the situation can quickly become complicated because of all of the value that must be assigned and ultimately divided.  It’s not uncommon for these San Diego high asset divorce cases to take years to be resolved, particularly if one of the parties feels that he or she is not being treated fairly by the court.  That seems to have been the case with a San Diego high asset divorce case involving Charles and Linda Brandes, who at one time were considered the wealthiest couple in the area.

While neither person was wealthy when they met and married in the 1980’s, over their years together they accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars in assets.  When they decided to pursue a divorce, the couple sparred over the amount of money that Mrs. Brandes would receive both in a lump sum and in the form of ongoing support.  Mrs. Brandes asked for a $597 million settlement and $735,000 per month in spousal support.

However, the judge ruled that Mr. Brandes pay his former spouse $10 million and $485,000 per month in support.  She will also receive ownership of properties in Del Mar and in New York with an aggregate value of $33 million.  Mr. Brandes will retain their home in Rancho Santa Fe, valued at approximately $60 million.  It is believed that an appeal of this ruling is likely.
