All of us have read, seen or perhaps even experienced the crunch that has come with the budget cuts and austerity measures that have been put in place across the United States.  The need to cut back on budgets has had an effect on just about every aspect of society, including law enforcement.  However, a recent decision made by officials in Kansas has advocates, victims and general citizens enraged.

The decision that was made was to stop enforcing and prosecuting domestic battery charges.  People who have been detained and who have stood accused of this crime have been released in Shawnee County.  Those who have been released were facing misdemeanor charges, and domestic violence advocates have loudly decried this decision.  Those who were behind the idea have cited a lack of funds to prosecute these offenses based on large budgetary cuts that have become necessary because of a lower tax base and the absence of other forms of revenue that would continue to fund this effort.

As it stands now, at least 35 reported incidents of domestic battery or assault have not been pursued, and 18 people have been released from jail with no charges pending.  Prosecutors have stated that this is not necessarily the end of the issue, and they hope to continue negotiating with other officials to recapture the funds to continue with the law’s enforcement.
