We posted a couple of weeks ago regarding a disturbing story coming out of Kansas that involves the inability of prosecutors to pursue misdemeanor domestic violence charges against alleged abusers because of a lack of budgetary funds.  It seems that Staten Island, New York is moving in the other direction in terms of its handling of this deeply troubling issue of domestic abuse, as it has announced a new program intended to provide an additional layer of protection for those who have suffered through this conduct.

According to local prosecutors, a new program will deal directly with people who have repeatedly violated what are known there as ‘stay-away’ orders, or what would be known in California as protective orders.  Those who fit this profile would be required to wear an electronic ankle bracelet that is somewhat similar to what those convicted of crimes are required to wear if they are sentenced to house arrest.  A company in Atlanta will handle the monitoring of those who are wearing these bracelets.

The program is set to be called the Domestic Violence GPS Initiative.  If the abuser moves within the distance he or she is supposed to keep from the victim, the bracelet will send a signal to the company in Atlanta, and the company will send a text message to the victim warning that person of a violation of the order.
