For generations, women faced a hard road after they completed a divorce with their husbands.  Statistics showed that a majority of them suffered a decline in income of at least 25 percent after their divorce was complete.  However, according to a recent study, fewer women are suffering through this level of income decline after a divorce now as compared to the 1970's, but it also appears that the opposite effect is taking place with men.

According to a study conducted by Pew Research, 63 percent of women suffered an income drop of at least 25 percent after a divorce in the 1970's.  That number has dropped to 49 percent in the present day.  Conversely, only 30 percent of men suffered that level of a drop in income after a divorce in the 1970's, but that number has risen to 47 percent today.  Therefore, about the same number of women and men deal with a substantial drop in income after a divorce now as compared to then.

Experts who have seen the results of this study tend to agree that the biggest factor behind this enormous shift concerns the entry of women into the workforce during that time in high numbers.  In addition, recent economic conditions have led to many job losses for men that also contribute to this statistical shift.

What this study should tell people who are considering ending their marriages is that for many people, completing a divorce is not necessarily the economic disaster that it would have been in generations past, particularly for women.  It also suggests that fewer people may continue to remain in an unhappy marriage because of financial concerns.

If you are contemplating the end of your marriage, you still need to take steps that are intended to protect your legal rights and overall interests.  You should seek the help of San Diego divorce lawyers who have been helping clients through this difficult process for many years.  Contact the law office of James D. Scott today to schedule an initial consultation.
