When someone is suffering through domestic abuse and that person ultimately takes steps to provide him or herself with protection by way of a protective order, the person who is accused of domestic violence is generally served with an order that requires no contact with the alleged abuse victim for a specified period of time.  In Wisconsin, this ‘no-contact’ rule lasts for at least 72 hours.

At this point, those who are served with this order and subsequently violate it can be faced with a civil forfeiture of up to $1,000.  However a new law that is expected to be signed by the Governor of Wisconsin will put into place much tougher penalties for the violation of this no-contact order.  Specifically, someone who violates this order could face a Class A misdemeanor for a first offense.  This could lead to a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 9 months in jail.  Repeat offenders could face felony charges if they are convicted of violating these orders.

Most people who watch these types of issues are applauding this new law, as it will act as more of a deterrence for those who are served with this protective order.  Most studies show that the chances for additional domestic abuse rise significantly in the days that follow an initial attack.  The Governor is expected to sign this bill within the next few days.
